Pine Crest Upper School student Kat Sutton ’26 recently had her original short story, “Waxing Nostalgic,” accepted for publication by “TriQuarterly,” a major national literary journal.

In “Waxing Nostalgic,” a grieving elementary school teacher clings to the comfort of crayons. The crayons were once a connection to his students and young son and are now a coping mechanism following his wife’s terminal cancer diagnosis. The story explores themes of loss, memory and healing through a poignant and emotionally resonant lens.

TriQuarterly, published by Northwestern University, is a highly respected literary journal that features fiction, nonfiction, poetry and hybrid work from emerging and established writers. Acceptance to this publication is a notable achievement in the world of creative writing and publishing.

In addition to her literary success, Kat also holds a position as Content Editor for “The Adroit Journal,” another nationally recognized publication known for highlighting the work of talented high school and college-aged writers alongside prominent voices in contemporary literature.

Congratulations, Kat!
