Pine Crest Upper School band member William Wakefield ’25 started the Band Mentoring Program for Pine Crest School band members in all three divisions on the Fort Lauderdale campus.

William started the group two years ago to offer mentorship from Upper School band members to Lower and Middle School band members.

“My motivation for creating the Band Mentoring Program,” William said, “was to increase a sense of community among the Pine Crest Band and Jazz students across grades and use the power of mentoring to have passionate student musicians inspire growing student musicians.”

William believes the Program offers many benefits to all of the students involved. “The program allows younger students to ask questions about what is coming up for them in music, and get advice from a student’s perspective on the choices ahead,” he said.

Meanwhile, the mentors “master their foundational music skills by teaching others,” William continued. “There is nothing like having to teach someone to ensure you know the subject matter backward and forward.”

William is happy to see the relationships that have been built over the last two years. He is grateful to the mentors and the music faculty for their support, and to the participants and their parents for trusting the Band Mentoring Program.
