Athletic Awards & Achievements

As the most prestigious award in high school sports, the Gatorade Player of the Year program recognizes not only athletic excellence but also academic achievement and exemplary character.

One female and one male winner from each of twelve sports are chosen from all 50 states, who are then considered for recognition at the National Player of the Year level. National Player of the Year recipients are finalists for the Gatorade Athlete of the Year.

In the more than 30 year legacy of the award, past Gatorade Athlete of the Year winners include Pine Crest alumnus Brandon Knight ’10 and sports icons such as  Peyton Manning, Abby Wambach, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Derek Jeter.

“Tsion had a remarkable track season last spring, and that propelled her into her best summer of training and her best cross country season ever,” said Paul Baur, Pine Crest Cross Country and Track and Field Program Head. “Her individual accomplishments are staggering, but how she brought the team together this season—despite our injuries— and to a finish on the podium for the seventh year in a row, will be something her teammates cherish forever.”

Tsion won the 2A Girls’ Cross Country State Championship in the fall, which was her third title. She is one of only 15 girls to have won three or more Cross Country State Championships in Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) history.

The recipient of the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year award will be announced in February.

Earlier this year, Tsion was named Broward County Runner of the Year by South Florida The Sun Sentinel, and named the 2018 Class 2A Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year by the Florida Dairy Farmers Association.

Congratulations, Tsion!
