Daniella Day
It took hundreds of tiles and scores of hours to create the mosaic. But on April 15, the tiled mammal was mounted proudly as a tribute to Daniella Folleco, who passed away this past summer. Daniella’s family and friends came together for a ceremony to honor the middle-school student who loved orcas and could make everyone smile. Students participated in a field day in their friend’s honor. Watch photoshow

Honoring Earth Day, Plastic Bottles Needed
Don’t throw away that plastic bottle, recycle it! Diana Dobin Kauppinen and her brother Michael Dobin of Valley Forge Fabrics, Inc. showed Lower School students the benefits of recycling. Their company recycles plastics into fabric. The Dobin Family came to Pine Crest to take part in Earth Day activities. Jake and Caleb Kauppinen helped their mom and uncle with demonstrations. The assembly transitioned nicely into the fifth-grade Green Team’s master plan to take Pine Crest green. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to save their empty plastic bottles and put them into garbage bags for the Green Team to collect.

fbirbragher@artnexus.com) or Mrs. Lori Leiter (Lefties222@aol.com). At that time, a representative from the Green Team will collect the bags and take them to the courtyard behind the infirmary where all bottles will be gathered. The goal of the Green Team is to form a “mountain” of plastic bottles to show the children how much and how fast trash collects and ultimately pollutes the environment. If instead of throwing them in the garbage, they were to consciously put them into recycling bins (which will be placed around the campus), we can transform them into reusable materials. The bottles collected by the students from now until the end of May will be taken to a recycling plant in Albany, New York, where they will be transformed into fiber and used to create beautiful fabrics at Valley Forge Fabrics, Inc.

Tennis Districts
Picture yourself in agony, with the feeling of pain all over your body, the sun burning the back of your neck, and the sweat dripping down your face; yes, you are in the midst of the tennis districts. PC Tennis Districts are three days worth of tough, lengthy, and tiresome tennis matches. Fortunately, for the first time, two teams this year get to advance into regionals from districts.

Seventh grader Roy Lederman won his position (#3 Singles) in three sets (6-3, 3-6, 6-3). Together with Lederman’s and Russell’s wins, the boys conquered Districts in points.
Senior David Muckey and Eighth grader Blaine Willenborg were one win shy of going to States. Though the previous year, David was able to go to states along with his previous doubles partner, this year he was not as successful. In all, the boys have had quite a successful season and hosted #2 seed, LaSalle High School in the Regional Semi-finals. It was a hard fought battle with #4 Carlos deBracamonte and #5 Tony Russell winning their singles matches. #3 Roy Lederman lost a tough match 6-4, 7-5. Pine Crest went into doubles needing both points to win the match but fell short at the #1 position.
The competition on the road to States has historically been more difficult then the level of play at States. This is due to our region including Gulliver. Gulliver consistently, not only appears at States, but, finishes strong, if not wins. These boys are young and over the years will acquire more knowledge and skills to hopefully send them on the tracks to represent Pine Crest in States. -Nicole Russell
